Worker Critically Injured In Accident While Doing Repair Work To Mine Near Antioch
ANTIOCH (KCBS)-- A worker was critically injured in one of the mines at the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve near Antioch Tuesday , according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
Fire officials said just before 11:30 a.m. that the worker was out of the mine but had been critically injured.
Fire Marshal, Robert Marshall, said workers were trying to stabilize the mines, which date back to the early 1900s, possibly earlier.
The company contracted to do the repairs was working on a column at the time of the accident when a boulder came loose, severely injuring the worker who was struck in the head and chest.
The fire district initially thought it was going to be a mine rescue, but the worker was able to be stabilized on site, brought out of the mine and transported by paramedics.
The accident victim was then airlifted by helicopter and taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
Marshall said OSHA would be on hand to investigate the accident.
According to Marshall, portions of these mines are open to the public on weekends.
