DOS PALOS (CBS/AP) — Authorities say three farm workers were killed and five others hospitalized after a van overturned on a Central California highway.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jesse Lopez said the victims were riding in a Chevrolet van, returning from a day of working in the fields, when the crash occurred on State Route 152 in Merced County.

Lopez said the van was heading east on the highway between Los Banos and Chowchilla when it drifted off the roadway. The driver overcorrected and the van rolled over.

Three people died at the scene and five were taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. The CHP said at least one of the survivors appeared to have major injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
