Drive-By Shooting, Pursuit Ends In Deadly Shootout In San Leandro

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) -- A drive-by shooting and pursuit ended in a deadly shootout in San Leandro.

The streets at East 14th and the Highway 238 offramp were still blocked off Tuesday morning as police investigated three different shootings that happened in a matter of hours involving the same suspect. The East 14th exit was shut down causing heavy traffic on I-580.

Police say a man in a black Durango fired several shots in the 900 block of 105th Avenue hitting a passerby in Oakland.

Oakland police officers tried to chase him, but he ditched his car and got away.

Around 2:30 a.m. he attempted a carjacking but failed. That's when CHP received a call with a description of the suspect.

Officers found the suspect walking on the I-238 freeway.

The suspect fired at the CHP and hit another car before running off the ramp onto East 14th in San Leandro where sheriff's deputies shot and killed him.

"Clearly we had a person who didn't care where those bullets were going, that's always a tough and difficult situation," said Alameda County Sheriff's spokesperson J. D. Nelson.

Fortunately no deputies were hurt, and the person who was shot in the drive-by is expected to be okay.
