Well-Known Neighborhood Ice Cream Man Shot, Killed Inside Truck In Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- Oakland police are investigating after a well-known ice cream man was fatally shot inside his van.
Jasvir Singh was shot Saturday in East Oakland. Police say a gunman approached the ice cream truck and fired five times before running away through backyards.
It happened at about 4:30 p.m. between 92nd and 94th avenues.
A witness says Singh crashed his van -- which is decorated with stickers depicting the candy and ice cream he sold -- into a parked car during the shooting.
Neighbors were stunned by the killing. Singh was the second man killed last week while working on an Oakland street. Artist Antonio Ramos was fatally shot on Tuesday while painting a mural in West Oakland.
"Every loss of life is tragic and that is why safety will continue to be my highest priority," Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement Sunday. "There is something especially poignant when someone engaged in a positive and innocent act -- like painting a mural or bringing ice cream to children -- is taken by senseless violence."
This year Oakland has recorded 74 homicides, up from 59 at the same point last year.
