Awesome Video Shows 1,705 Planets Orbiting In Wondrous Detail

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An awesome video created by an astronomy student manages to capture thousands of planets in hundreds systems in all their wonderful "wondrousness" -- if that is even a word (it isn't).

All hats in the universe off to Ethan Kruse, who has made a positively hypnotic video showing all the multi-planet systems captured by the Kepler Orrery space telescope.

It's only a minute long, but it's 60 seconds well-spent.

As of November 24, Kepler has identified some 1705 planets in 885 systems. Kruse notes that the size of the orbits in his video are to scale, but the size of the planets are not.

"The orbits are all synchronized such that Kepler observed a planet transit every time it hits an angle of 0 degrees (the 3 o'clock position on a clock)," explains Kruse. "Planet colors are based on their approximate equilibrium temperatures, as shown in the legend."

Armchair astronomers will have fun overthinking this, but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to appreciate Kruse's work. So, let's just dispense with the science-talk... enjoy!
