Man Dies After Early Morning Scuffle With Antioch Police
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A 37-year-old man died early Friday after clashing with Antioch police officers as they took him into custody on a parole warrant, according to police.
At 3:12 a.m., an officer spotted two people in an occupied vehicle on East Sixth Street and one was identified as having a parolee at large warrant.
Police said officers initially searched for the man on Wednesday night after he reportedly walked out of a hospital against doctor's orders after being admitted Tuesday. He was not found at that time.
Police said he was located sleeping in a vehicle with a friend early Friday when officers attempted to take him into custody.
The man "fought violently with the officers," police said. When he was restrained, an ambulance was called to the scene for treatment of injuries he suffered in the scuffle.
Police said he began experiencing "some sort of medical distress" as the ambulance arrived and life-saving measures were taken. He was taken to a hospital and was later pronounced dead.
The officers involved suffered minor injuries during the incident.
The other person in the vehicle was not involved in the altercation and is cooperating with the investigation.
This is being considered an in-custody death, police said.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, the county's crime lab and Antioch police were conducting an investigation into the incident.
