SUNOL (CBS SF) — Nine passengers were injured aboard a commuter train that derailed Monday evening in a rural, unincorporated part of Alameda County, according to emergency personnel.
Emergency personnel initially said 14 passengers were injured, but late Monday night said only nine people suffered injuries when the train derailed about 45 miles east of San Francisco.READ MORE: Driver Injured in Freeway Shooting on I-880 in San Jose
The Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) train No. 10, an eastbound train, derailed near Niles Canyon Road while traveling from San Jose to Stockton, via Fremont around 7:30 p.m.
The Alameda County Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department, Cal Fire, the California Highway Patrol and local paramedics responded and removed all passengers from the derailed cars.
The Alameda County Fire Department said of the injured passengers, at least four people suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
ACE officials said 214 people were aboard the train.
A fallen tree across the railroad tracks caused the front two cars of the train to derail, according to ACE officials.
One car of the train derailed and fell on its side into the Alameda Creek and another car derailed onto land, according to ACE officials.
Alameda County fire officials said via Twitter, at about 8:30 p.m., “that all passengers have been removed from derailed train & are being assessed.”
A passenger, apparently on board the ACE train, tweeted this:
Non-injured passengers were transported to the Alameda County Fairgrounds and then onto their final destinations.
The Fremont Police Department issued a statement stating that Niles Canyon Road was closed due to the derailment and likely to remain closed for several hours.
The California Department of Transportation said eastbound and westbound state Highway 84 closed from Palomares Road to Main Street due to the incident.
ACE train No. 8 had passed through the area unscathed about an hour prior to the derailment of ACE train No. 10, according to ACE officials.
