Next Apple Watch May Have Cellular Data

CUPERTINO (KCBS) – A year after its debut, the Apple Watch may soon break free from the iPhone. The tech giant is reportedly adding cellular connectivity to the device.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the next generation smartwatch will have its own cellular antenna, so it can be used with or without a smartphone.

Since its debut last April, analysts estimate Apple has sold about 12 million smartwatches, but a common complaint is that it has to be tethered wirelessly to an iPhone.

Apple has not commented on the newspaper's report.

One possible challenge with a standalone watch is convincing users who already pay a data plan on their phone would be adding another plan for their watch.
