SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — While it might seem a case of the tail wagging the dog, San Francisco International Airport, in order to stay out of the dog house, is working like a dog to get more pet friendly – to the relief of dog owners, and dogs.

“This is essentially a space that has been designated so that travelers can bring their pets to relieve themselves, before or after a flight,” SFO Public Information Officer Doug Yakel said.

There are three such areas at SFO, outside and in between terminals next to where smokers are allowed to puff.

San Jose and Oakland airports have the pet relief stations outside, too. But, SFO is about to open more areas where your dog can be free to go doggy style. Three more after travelers and their pups go through security.

“These will be on the concourse level, in an enclosed area, essentially a section of astro turf and a fire hydrant,” Yakel said.

Truffles the service dog wasn’t talking, but her owner, who preferred to be identified only as Truffles’ mom, was relieved to find the relief areas.

“Normally I would prepare ahead, and I would make sure she’s eaten enough, and had lots of time to go to the bathroom. But, this is a great option,” Truffles’ mom said.

Especially in the upcoming summer travel season when security lines are expected to be long and slow.
