Five Arrested At Illegal Candlestick Park Sideshow

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Five people have been arrested on a variety of traffic charges after San Francisco police busted up an illegal weekend sideshow near the former site of Candlestick Park.

Bayview Police Station commander Capt. Raj Vaswani said three cars were also seized.

Officers were called to Jamestown Avenue and Candlestick Park at around 5:40 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a large crowd and cars taking part in the sideshow.

Arriving officers were confronted by a crowd of 50-60 people – many of them filming and encouraging the drivers involved in the high-speed stunts.

Vaswani told the San Francisco Chronicle that those arrested were facing charges including suspicion of reckless driving, not carrying insurance, vandalizing a police cruiser and speeding or ignoring stop signs.

After being cited, the five were released from custody. Four of the five arrested were from Brisbane, Half Moon Bay or Oakland.

"With these sideshows, I know people think of them as harmless, but a lot of them escalate to more serious crimes," Vaswani told the paper.
