Resurgent A's Cool Off Red-Hot Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Brandon Crawford and the rest of the San Francisco hitters kept giving the Giants the lead only to watch the bullpen squander it away.

Crawford drove in five runs and Jarrett Parker and Denard Span homered but it went to waste because San Francisco's relievers allowed 10 runs in a 13-11 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

"They're big boys," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "They have to deal with this like all of us do. They're going to have their moments. They've really done a good job. This was one of those wild games. You have one of these games once in a while. Hopefully you come out on top but we didn't."

Pinch-hitter Jake Smolinski hit a go-ahead, three-run homer during Oakland's five-run eighth inning and the A's added three insurance runs in the ninth that proved vital when the Giants rallied in the bottom half.

Back-to-back homers from Parker and Span to open the inning cut Oakland's lead to 13-11. Angel Pagan then drew a walk before Ryan Madson got Brandon Belt to fly out and struck out Buster Posey and Crawford to complete the six-out save.

"They kept fighting," Bochy said. "Both sides struggled with the pitching side of it. You have to wash a game like this off if you're a reliever. They're going to have times when it's not going to go well. Now you hope it doesn't happen with two or three guys, and that's what happened tonight."

The Giants broke out to a 4-1 lead before Stephen Vogt hit a two-run double and Billy Butler added a two-run single off George Kontos to start the rough night of relief.

Crawford put San Francisco back ahead in the bottom half with a bases-loaded triple in a four-run inning but that three-run lead proved short-lived.

Cory Gearrin walked the first two batters in the eighth before allowing an RBI single to Marcus Semien.

"I'm definitely disappointed in the walks," Gearrin said. "You just can't do it at the end of the game. You can't put guys on base, especially with an offense that's doing what they're doing right now."

Javier Lopez (0-2) entered and was saved when Span made a spectacular running catch to rob Phegley of a potential tying extra-base hit. The reprieve lasted just one batter as Smolinski followed with the drive into the left-field seats that put Oakland up 9-8.

The A's tacked on four more runs before surviving the ninth for their second straight win in the Bay Bridge series.

"That was some game, so many different swings," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "To get two innings out of Madson like that was Herculean."

Zach Neal (1-1) pitched one inning for his first major league win.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Athletics: OF Josh Reddick was reinstated from the DL and OF/INF Max Muncy was optioned to Triple-A Nashville. Reddick had been out since May 20 with a broken left thumb. He went 1 for 6. ... LHP Rich Hill is expected to return to the rotation Saturday against Pittsburgh. He has been out since injuring his groin May 29.

Giants: 2B Joe Panik was scratched from the lineup with symptoms of a possible head injury. Panik was hit by a pitch June 18 by Tampa Bay's Matt Moore and passed three days of tests after that. He complained of symptoms after Monday night's game, leading to more tests. Bochy said the team should know by Wednesday if Panik will need to be placed on the DL.
