(CBS SF) -- Former NFL coach Dennis Green, who coached the Stanford Cardinal football program in the late 1980s and was an assistant for the San Francisco 49ers, died Friday at the age of 67.

According to CBSSports.com, Green passed away after suffering from cardiac arrest.

Green's first stint the Bay Area was running backs coach at Stanford from 1977 to 1978 and a special teams coach with the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. After coaching the football program at Northwestern University in the early 1980s, Green returned to the Bay Area as a wide receivers coach for the 49ers in 1986.

Green became the head football coach at Stanford in 1989, the first black head coach in what was then the Pac-10 Conference. In three seasons, Green had a record of 16-18 with the Cardinal.

Both the Stanford football program and the 49ers expressed their condolences on Twitter.

In 1992, Green returned to the NFL and became the head coach the Minnesota Vikings until 2001, leading Minnesota to two NFC Championship games. From 2004 to 2006 he was head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Following a 2006 game where the Cardinals lost to the Chicago Bears after leading by 20 points, Green went on a post-game tirade that has become famous.

Green finished his NFL coaching career with a 113-94 regular season record and a 4-8 postseason record.
