SANTA CLARA (AP) — Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will sit out the San Francisco 49ers exhibition opener with tightness in his throwing shoulder.

Kaepernick is competing with Blaine Gabbert for San Francisco’s starting quarterback role. Kaepernick lost the starting job midway through last season.
