Man Suspected Of Shooting SFPD Officer In The Head Dies

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man suspected of critically injuring a San Francisco police officer Friday night has died.

The man, identified as Nicholas McWherther, 26, died of injuries he sustained in a shoot-out with police.

McWherther allegedly shot San Francisco police officer Kevin Downs in the head Friday night.

Downs was responding to reports of a mentally disturbed person threatening people near the Lakeshore Plaza Shopping Center on Sloat Boulevard when he was shot.

"He still has partial paralysis on the side of his body, from the shot to the head," Chaplin said at a brief midmorning press conference Saturday.

Downs is in critical, but stable condition.

The officers chases McWherther through Stern Grove Park. He opened fire on the officers as they tried to take him into custody.

McWherther died of his injuries on Sunday.
