MONTEREY (CBS / AP) – Voters in an oil-producing county in California have cracked down on fracking and new oil-well drilling.
Monterey County voters adopted a ballot measure Tuesday that will phase out new oil drilling and ban fracking.
Oil companies had helped raise more than $5 million against the measure. Bernie Sanders and actor Leonardo DiCaprio were among those campaigning for the Monterey County fracking ban.
Monterey County is the state’s fourth-biggest oil-producing county. It’s the seventh county in California to ban fracking.
