SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) – The message on the banner being towed by a plane over the San Francisco 49ers Levi’s Stadium summed up the frustrations of many fans over the team’s dismal 1-12 record this season.
It read: “Jed, You Reap What You Sow – FireBaalke”
The banner is in reference to a tweet posted last year by departed coach Jim Harbaugh after the 49ers fired the man who replaced him as San Francisco head coach – Jim Tomsula. Harbaugh felt that he was undercut by the 49ers management.
Harbaugh built the 49ers from a six-win team to a club that was one play away from a Super Bowl title but was let go after the 2014 season and replaced with Tomsula.
The Niners went 5-11 under Tomsula and he was fired in the off-season and replaced by former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. After an opening game win, San Francisco has gone on a historic and epic collapse losing 12 straight games.
What many 49ers fans will tell you is that 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke is the man who should be blamed for the tailspin.
Baalke was a guest on KNBR 680 in San Francisco late last month and was asked about the failures.
“You know, they give us everything we need and I’ve said that,” he told the station. “I’ve gone public with that. If we don’t get it done, put it on me.”
“We’ve got all the resources necessary. Funding has never been an issue at the free agent market, or any other thing that we’ve needed. So, it falls strictly on my shoulders. I’m disappointed, I’m disappointed with the outcome up until now.”
Baalke said he also feels for the fans and for the 49ers ownership.
“(Losing is) a draining experience,” he said. “I feel bad for the fans, I feel bad for a lot of people, the ownership in particular.”
