SALINAS (CBS SF) – A 35-year-old man who allegedly had a sex with a 17-year-old girl he met while teaching at Salinas High School was arrested on Thursday, police said.

Juan Govea was arrested on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a juvenile and other crimes, police said.

Police found Govea at his Willow Street residence and took him into custody around 10:20 a.m., police said.

Officers learned Govea’s alleged relationship with the teen began six months after he stopped working at the school, according to police.

The investigation also showed the 35-year-old man was suspected of having sex with the girl at his home, police said.

School administrators learned about the alleged inappropriate relationship on Thursday and quickly reported it to police, Salinas Union High School District officials said Saturday.

It appeared the alleged crimes didn’t take place on campus or while the suspect was working for the district, school officials said.
