SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — Car break-ins are on the rise across the Bay Area. In fact, 2017 was a record-breaking year for our three largest cities.

We’re seeing record numbers of car burglaries in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. Chances it has happened to you or someone you know.

San Francisco leads the pack with 31,120 break-ins last year.

In the same period, San Jose reported 6,476 car burglaries. That number is the highest the city has ever seen and a 17 percent increase compared to 2016.

It was also a record year in Oakland with 10,007 reported cases in 2017, up 32% compared to the previous year.

Unlike San Francisco, where burglars are targeting rental cars and tourist destinations, in Oakland, the majority of the break-ins are in commercial districts, where people go shop and dine.

The Oakland Police Department says more than 60 percent of the auto burglaries happened west of Lake Merritt, in North and West Oakland, thought there are fewer homicides, and more burglaries. It’s the opposite in East Oakland, where there are fewer burglaries and more homicides.

One reason for the uptick is that the items left in cars have gotten more expensive over the years, like laptops and smart phones.

Also, the chances of getting caught are very slim. In San Francisco, for example, not even 2 percent of the thieves are nabbed.

“My car has been broken into 4 times. I’m frustrated because nothing is being done,” says Edgar Garcia, who lives in the City’s the Mission District. “Now, I’m debating if I should sell my car but I have two kids and need my car for my kids.”

In San Francisco the District Attorney is asking the city for $1 million dollars to form a burglary Task Force.

But in most Bay Area cities, it’s a low priority crime. The statistical truth is very few car burglaries get solved.

To make matters worse, these statistics are just reported break-ins. Police say the actual numbers are likely much higher, because many car burglary victims don’t even bother reporting them anymore.

They are just redistributing wealth. What’s the big deal?

  2. End ALL Federal $$$, Remove ALL I.C.E. Agents and Relocate ALL the Homeless to “Crumbs” Pelosi’s Multi-Million Dollar Neighborhood……

Then, make some popcorn…..grab a case of beer….and have a fun time Watching the SOCIALISTA’s DEMOLITION DERBY!

  3. This is voter punishment for the Alt-Left of the Bay Area. They have supported every Alt-Left political hack in the state, who has in turn supported every law lowering the threshold of what is a felony crime. They have emptied the prisons and made hard drug use normal, result a lot of people who need fast cash since they need drugs and cannot or don’t want jobs…….harvest your reward liberal voter !

  4. Todd Thomas says:

Progressive redistribution of wealth….they have little interest in preventing these ‘crimes’.

  5. As a sanctuary city…you should leave your homes and cars unlocked! Stop making it seem as if you don’t want to share with the “dreamers.”

    1. Dee Merk says:

You people voted for Sanctuary City status. ENJOY.

  6. What is happening in the beautiful city by the bay? My wife and I began our marriage there many years ago and it has always been a special place for us, but now it’s hardly recognizable.

    1. What has happened? You ruined it with your progressive government. Good work. Now cash in and move to some red state and ruin that too.

  7. Locked cars are the same as a border wall….HYPOCRITES!

  8. Susan Vue says:

To live in San Fran you need to love the smell of urine, fecal matter & vomit in the morning.

  9. Arthur Burns says:

How’s that sanctuary city idea working out for you? Part of a culture is a morality and a respect for law. Obviously there are countries where citizens do not learn that. Let’s all invite them here.

  10. All is well in the Socialist paradise of Kalifornia, next step Venezuela. Stop complaining, as a prominent Marxist once said, “elections have consequences”.

  11. Tomas Cruz says:

Giving sanctuary to criminals has consequences.

  12. Charles Chan says:

It’s fair to say that since the break in’s are ignored, it is legal in San Francisco to break into a car and steal whatever you are after.

Junkies got to eat too, you know.

  13. You didn’t buy that car! What makes you think the stuff you leave in it is yours, either?

  14. Scott Norris says:

The residents of California are 100% for illegal activity when it comes to immigration, drugs, prostitution, crimes committed by illegal aliens, etc…. But they don’t want illegals or other criminals breaking into their cars? Why not? A crime is a crime. You want to forgive all other crimes, let this one go too.

It’s only a car, a symbol of wealth and excess. The homeless don’t have cars. The poor don’t have cars. The blind don’t have cars. If they don’t need cars, neither do you people in SanFran, Oakland or San Jose. Get over yourselves and buy a bicycle.

  15. Want to stop the auto break ins, it is simple really. Leave guns in the cars and report them stolen. Once the press starts reporting “guns stolen from locked cars” the liberal heads will explode. Police will either start arresting people for keeping guns legally locked in their cars or they will crack down on car break ins because gun violence is caused by guns, not criminals with guns remember.

One must think like a moron to effectively communicate with a moronically defined culture

  16. Joe Daigle says:

The liberals shouldn’t be driving cars at all because they cause pollution and climate change. Shame on them and they should be reported to Moonbeam so charges can be considered. The thieves are just doing the earth a favor by discouraging you from polluting the atmosphere.

  17. Oakland, Berkley and SF do not prosecute “petty” crimes unless they exceed $600, effectively giving the thumbs up to anyone who wants break in to a car or steal. It is a clear abdication of duties. Of course, when you have a mayor like Libby Schaaf who tips off convicted criminals to police / ICE raids, it becomes clear that illegals and criminals matter more than law abiding residents to the progressive liberals. Which begs the question, why do we call them “progressives”? They are racist, bigoted and pro segregation, they in fact espouse the same policies as the Ku Klux Klan which makes them Regressive not Progressive.

  18. is this an art film or a news report ?

    1. That was actually kind of entertaining for a news report. I’m all in favor of this style of reporting.

  19. and the police take reports online and then try to justify more police to take reports online. They do nothing!

  20. As an open border cities, the residents obviously feel entitled to opening ALL DOORS, regardless of ownership and completely disregard any laws that are in place.
    No surprise here, move along

  21. Robert Dunn says:

You can get away with a lot of crime in liberal cities especially if you’re a member of a favored minority. They’d rather your stuff get stolen than they be called ‘racists’ for enforcing the lae equally! Of course, San Francisco is the city that found a multiple deported illegal alien ‘not guilty’ of murder even though there were witnesses to it. When you also factor in the needles, dung, and trash everywhere who in their right mind would spend $3,000 a month for a studio apartment in that toilet??

  22. bvikay says:

Just gotta love the liberal world of illegal aliens in the Bay Area. Where they come from cheating and stealing, not to mention raping, is a way of life. So sad.

  23. Peter York says:

    “I left my car
    in San Francisco,
    high on a hill,
    on blocks, you see.

    An empty can of beer,
    some needles and a q u e e r ,
    all now reside inside
beside a discrete pile of poo.

If I head back to thee,
    San Francisco,
    your golden sun
    will warm it all.”

  24. akramden1 says:

    Come on now – Remember – Tolerance…

  25. This is a reflection of the state as a whole. Sanctuary state = Criminal state.

  26. Car was robbed there about a year ago in a locked parking garage and the police did nothing, but they explained to us why. It isn’t worth the time. We were told the judges just let them go. They are arresting people 5 and 6 times for the break ins and the courts do nothing. They basically treat it like a ticket. For those committing the break ins it’s a way of life, they know the punishment is non-existent so they continue. The police were very nice, they offered to take a report but said it would be a waste of time (we would have to go into station and wait about 4 hours) and we would miss our flight, they directed us to the online reporting which we did on return, took a lot less time and worked for insurance. The system is really a joke.

  27. Robert Blum says:

From the top (the Clintons) and the bottom, lawlessness with impunity has been sanctioned. So in regards tp lawlessness amongst anyone /everyone else, what difference does it make ?

  28. So sad-I love San Francisco-now my friends there tell me NOT to visit! I read recently, that there is so much human waste on the streets, that when it dries and crumbles, the dust blows for miles-you can get a fatal infection from inhaling it!
