Progress Made Against Blaze On California-Oregon Border
HORNBROOK, Siskiyou County (AP) — Thousands of firefighters aided by milder weather continued to make progress against a deadly blaze along the California-Oregon state line.
California fire officials said Tuesday the blaze is 45 percent contained. They say overnight humidity allowed crews to gain ground against the blaze that has 57 square miles (147 square kilometers).
The fire, one of many in the drought-ridden U.S. West, killed one person in their home and destroyed 72 structures.
It also injured three firefighters, including one who had severe burns to his face and had to be hospitalized.
The blaze that started Thursday near the community of Hornbrook and jumped into Oregon over the weekend.
Nearly 2,800 firefighters are assigned to the fire that is threatening more than 1,000 structures.
