"He tried to steal the wrong vehicle," CHP Officer Sean Layton said.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Richmond man, was driving a Subaru Crosstrek stolen in the East Bay earlier Saturday morning. He collided with a Honda Accord on southbound 880 near the Broadway off ramp shortly after 6 a.m.

When a California Department of Corrections officer driving a Dodge Charger pulled up to help after the wreck, the suspect allegedly tried to steal the Dodge.

No injuries were reported, but the suspect was being evaluated at a hospital because he had been involved in a collisio The CHP contacted the owner of the stolen Subaru.
