THE DEFENSE

Q: Welcome to Defend Your Ride San Francisco! What can you tell us about yourself?

A: My name is Larry. I'm 63. I'm down here at Fort Point for the last 35 or 36 years.

Q: What do you do here at Fort Point?

A: I usually surf. I also stand up paddle. I used to water ski around the tower. This is kind of like my playground.

Q: Fun! This is a great playground.

A: Best playground around.

Q: Do you live in this area?

A: Actually I live across the bridge in Navato.

Q: OK, so you come over here how often?

A: Every day. Usually I'll leave at 5:30 in the morning and it takes 20 minutes. It's not bad.

Q: Wow, every day? Great, well could you tell us about your car?

A: My car is a 2008. It is called an HHR, Chevy. It's not a regular one. It's a panel truck with only two windows in the front and one in the back, no windows on the sides. It's modeled after a 1949 Chevrolet panel truck, suburban and it's miniaturized. People often think it's a PT Cruiser, but it is not.

Q: Interesting. What made you choose this car?

A: I like it because you can't really see in it. I have a lot of surfboards and paddle boards, so kind of out of sight out of mind. I don't worry about my things getting stolen. Also, I like the aesthetics of it.

Q: That's smart. It keeps things secret and it is a sleek looking car. So your main use is for recreation?

A: Yeah, my main use for it is surfing, stand up paddle boarding and other sports.

Q: What's the farthest you've ever driven this car?

A: Probably down to L.A. It was very comfortable. It got pretty good gas mileage, but not as good as I hoped. Usually once a month to the central coast, which is about 250 miles from here. Surfing!
