San Carlos Vice Mayor Arrested For Suspected DUI
SAN CARLOS (CBS SF) -- San Carlos Vice Mayor Andy Klein was arrested on suspicion of DUI early Thursday morning after he was apparently driving back from the funeral of Mayor Omar Ahmad, who died suddenly of a heart attack on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
San Mateo County sheriff's deputies initially went to check on Klein after they found his car pulled over on the right shoulder of theEdgewood Road off-ramp on Interstate Highway 280 at about 12:30 a.m., CHP Officer Art Montiel said.
Deputies smelled alcohol in Klein's car and called the CHP, Montiel said.
Arriving CHP officers performed a Breathalyzer test and found Klein's blood alcohol content was at 0.08 percent, just at the legal limit, Montiel said.
Klein was then arrested at about 1:10 a.m. and taken to a First Chance sobering area at 335 Quarry Road, where he underwent blood tests and was released to a family member, Montiel said.
During his arrest, Klein told officers he pulled over to take a phone call while he was returning from Ahmad's funeral in Belmont, which was at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Yaseen Foundation on 621 Masonic Way.
Ahmad, 46, who became mayor in November, was taken toSequoia Hospitalin Redwood City after calling 911 from his home, according to Klein.
Ahmad was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.
Flags were lowered atSan CarlosCity Hallon Tuesday in honor of Ahmad. The San Mateo County Transit District, whose board Ahmad served on, also lowered flags at its facilities.
Ahmad's memorial will be at the Hiller Aviation Museum at 601 Skyway Road at 3 p.m. Friday. It is open to the public.
The vice mayor did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment about his arrest.
