Family Discovers Body Of 1 Of 2 Missing San Mateo Coast Fishermen

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- Family members of two San Francisco fishermen who went missing in the waters off of the San Mateo County coast discovered the body of one of the fishermen just north of Pigeon Point Lighthouse on Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Family members of the missing persons were walking the remote shoreline searching for their loved ones when they came across the body, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. He was identified by a sheriff's spokeswoman Tuesday as 62-year-old Carl Deng.

A second fisherman, Ping Tao Tsang, 55, of San Francisco, remained missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the found body at 6:30 p.m., just a few hours after the search for the fishermen was suspended at 3:30 p.m.

The men disappeared at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when a large wave struck their 18-foot Striper boat near the Pigeon Point Light Station, San Mateo County sheriff's Detective Rebecca Rosenblatt said.

Deng, Tsang and two other men were on board the boat that left a marina near Candlestick Park at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Rosenblatt said.

Deng and Tsang were not believed to have been wearing life vests when the wave struck, and were reported missing, Rosenblatt said.

The two other men on board were wearing life vests, Rosenblatt said, and they managed to swim to shore and report the emergency to the sheriff's office.

The U.S. Coast Guard, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and auxiliary volunteer teams have been searching the ocean waters and the coastline since the accident, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and two 87-foot vessels scoured the water and sheriff's units continued to search a long stretch of remote beaches in southern San Mateo County before the search was suspended.
