GILROY (CBS SF) — A furniture store in Gilroy that was never open turned out to be a front for a huge indoor marijuana growing operation, according to authorities.
The Santa Clara County’s Marijuana Enforcement Team and the Gilroy Police Department last Thursday raided the furniture store on the 7500 block of Monterey Road following an investigation.
Detectives said at the rear of the furniture store there were more than 1,000 marijuana plants and over 50 pounds of processed marijuana worth an estimated $2 million.
Deputies arrested 39-year0old Phuc Nguyen inside the fake furniture store and he was booked into the Main Jail on charges of illegal marijuana cultivation and theft of utilities.
Nguyen had allegedly bypassed the electrical meter and had stolen about $80,000 worth of electricity from PG&E, according to the sheriff’s office.
Nguyen’s bail was set at $200,000.
