8 Injured, 2 Critically, After Driver Slams Into Outdoor Diners Area in San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- An elderly driver slammed his vehicle into an outdoor dining area at Grand Century Plaza Sunday, sending eight people to the hospital with two suffering "life-threatening" injuries, San Jose police said late Sunday afternoon.

Nine people altogether, including the 69-year-old driver of the 2000 Toyota 4-Runner, suffered injuries ranging from "major to minor" when the elderly driver accidentally accelerated while trying to park at the Grand Century Plaza at Story and McLaughlin Roads in east San Jose, police said. The SUV plowed into outdoor tables at the Dynasty Chinese seafood restaurant at 1001 Story Road.

The victims are three women and five men, in addition to the SUV's driver. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said.

"Indications are the elderly male may have been in medical distress prior to the collision," San Jose police tweeted.

Police are looking for witnesses or anyone else with information on this accident to police Detective Matt Templeman at (408) 277-4654.
